Cyberpunk 2050 Timeline

Home-made supplement to Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0 rpg

It sends the original timeline 30 years later with a few new events based on current trends and fears.

Events in black are from the original rulebook forwarded by about 30 years.
Historical and new events.

2000 Y2K bug didn't cause catastrophe. Apocalypse believers failed as usual.
2001 On 11th of September Islamic terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners and using them destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York and damaged the Pentagon. The United States responded with the War on Terrorism and invaded Afghanistan and later Iraq (2003).
2002 Kevin Warwick the "first cyborg". He has carried out a series of pioneering experiments involving the neuro-surgical implantation of a device into the median nerves of his left arm in order to link his nervous system directly to a computer in order to assess the latest technology for use with the disabled.
2004 Tsunami in the Indian Ocean kills 230,000.
2007 World food price crisis because of disasters, biofuel production and high oil prices. Food prices doubled. Riots in poor countries.

The first perfect cyberarm.

The first known cyber war. After Estonian authorities began removing a statue of a World War II-era Soviet soldier from a park Russian hackers lauched data-flooding attacks on Estonia's computer networks.

2008 Global financial crisis.

The first form of perceptive cyberskin is invented.

Genetical muscle booster invented. It is dangerous to the human health yet.

2009 Exoskeleton invented.
2010 Scientists created synthetic life, a bacterium with man-made set of genetic code.
2011

Earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident in Japan (Fukushima).

Syrian civil war starts.

Global population reached 7 billion.

First synthetic organ transplant.

2012 3D printers spread. The first printed weapons appear.
2014

Russia annexes Crimea from Ukraine after pro European revolution in Kiev. Russian military intervention in East-Ukraine, their soldiers wear no insignias.

Serious ebola epidemic in West Africa.

Islamic State founded on Syrian and Iraqi lands - a military group with religious propaganda.

Personal DNA sequencing costs only $100. Personalized diagnosis and treatments are possible.

2015 The first migration crisis in Europe. 1.8 million migrants, mostly Syrians, swarm the EU this year.
2019

The Aral Sea disappears completely. Lake Chad dries in Africa.

Self-driving cars and automated freight transport are widespread in a few countries.

UK leaves the European Union.

2020

UK becomes the most populous country in Europe overtaking both Germany and France.

Southwestern deserts and semi-deserts of the US permanently expand. Sea water desalination plants provide drinking water but agriculture is no longer possible. Hoover Dam ceases to work.

2022

India is the most populous country in the world.

Nanotech clothing.

2024 Global population reaches 8 billion.
2025

Yemen collapses due they run out of oil resources and drinking water. Warlords rule the country.

2027

Communist dictatorship collapses in Northern Korea. Two years later the two Koreas unite.

A toxic spill kills off most of salmon population in Pacific Northwest. The Seattle economy is crippled.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency develops and spreads several designer plagues worldwide, targeting coca and opium plants. The governments of Chile and Ecuador collapse. A savage drug war breaks out between dealers and the DEA all over the Americas.

Cyber limbs are almost as agile as humans.

2028

Oil price reaches a very high level worldwide and remain there. Everything is more expensive by 50% which depends on oil: gasoline, food, electricity and plastics. The start of the Energy Crisis.

Neo-Luddites are re-established in western Kentucky. Over the next ten years, the "Luds" are responsible for bombing of airports, factories, freeways and mass transit terminals.

2029

Hunger kills ten millions every year. Food riots in the Third World are common. Many poor states collapse. The population of the Earth stops growing. Developed countries rarely suffer food shortages.

The First Central American Conflict: The U.S. engages in interventionist actions in Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador. Military forces are sent to secure the Canal Zone from an ex-U.S. puppet dictator.

The first TRC Biological Interface Chips are developed in Munich, Germany.

2030 Massive firestorms, collectively called "the Brushfire", rage over the Northwestern U.S., destroying millions of acres of farm and grassland.

Stock Market crash worldwide. The U.S. economy teeters on the brink of collapse.

The Big Bird Flu hits the world killing 10% of the world population, seven hundreds of millions. Legal measures are instituted that severely restrict the rights of those with infectious diseases.

First "extended family" Posergangs established.

Gas extraction starts to decrease.

Federal Weapons Statute established allowing personal firearms widespread distribution. Many people arm themselves in the face of chaos and social breakdown, but this gunslinger attitude only contributes to the decline.

2031

The framework of the Global Computer Net is firmly in place with construction of the WorldSat network. Computer systems around the world are linked via a vast telecommunications grid.

"Rockerboy" Manson killed in England.

2032 The Food Crash: A mutated plant virus wipes out Canadian and Russian crops. U.S. agrobusiness crops survive due to new biological counteragent. Russia accuses U.S. of biological warfare.

9.2 earthquake hits California destroying Los Angeles and plunging the state into bankruptcy. An estimated 250,000 are killed or missing.

Arab terrorists detonate a nuclear device in New York. The whole city is destroyed or contaminated and over 600,000 are killed.

2033

Hurricane destroys Houston killing 2700.

The Nomad Riots: By the end of the year, one in ten Americans are homeless due the drought of the midwest, financial crash, California earthquake or the hurricane. Hundreds of thousands riot for living space throughout the U.S., as nomad packs spring up on the West Coast and spread rapidly throughout the nation. Boostergangs begin to appear in urban areas. The Constitution suspended, and martial law established by the Secretary of Defense, Jonathan Seward.

The Collapse of the United States: Weakened by losses in the World Stock Crash of 2015, overwhelmed by unemployment, homelessness and corruption, many city and state governments collapse or go bankrupt. Thirteen high ranking U.S. politicians, including the president and vice president, tragically die or are killed in a variety of "incidents." Beheaded, burdened by a staggering deficit and snarled in the machinations of it's own bureaucracy, the U.S. government is totally ineffective. Many small businesses are swept away, as only megacorporations are large enough to weather the troubles intact. Unemployment soars as the value of the U.S. dollar plummets.

Lawyer Purge: Irate citizens lynch hundreds of criminal defense attorneys.

The invention of the new generation nuclear reactors.

2034 The First Corporate War: Twelve multinational corporations, including European Business Systems, battle for control of Trans-World Air. Armed raids, computer sabotage, and terrorist tactics characterize the conflict.

First cloned tissue growth in vitro. Microsutures and sterilizer fields become some of the first of a wave of high-tech medical breakthroughs.

2035 The Cybermodem is invented. Direct neural interface with computers becomes possible.

EBM solos attack Tokyo office of Kenjiri Technologies, killing 18.

Operation Big Stick: U.S. military destroys the Mantonga Corp as an example to others.

End of first Corp War.

The state of Connecticut goes bankrupt.

Food riots in Denver kill 52.

Domestically, martial law continues. The U.S. legal process is streamlined to handle the number of arrests currently being sent through the system.

Amid the domestic chaos Hawaii is declared a military preserve.

Self-driving cars are widespread in the developed world.

Artificial meat is on the market.

2036 The Second or Little Bird Flu hits the world killing 5% of the world population, three hundreds of millions.

Cybernetic implants come into common usage by First World elite military units. Corporations start to follow suit with their in-house security forces.

First known human clone grown in vitro. Mindless, it only lives for 6 hours.

Unemployed people in the developed countries starts to migrate in farms and villages and work in the agriculture.

2037 The Second Central American Conflict: U.S. invades Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezeula. The war is a disaster that costs thousands of American lives. It is later revealed to have been largely engineered by the National Security Council and the CIA. During the conflict, some soldiers are equipped with experimental cyberware to enhance their combat effectiveness.

The Second Corporate War: A number of firms, including Petrochem, dispute control of oil fields in the South China Sea. Some governments actively support both sides in the conflict.

Corporations begin to methodically and ruthlessly eradicate Mob rule in many U.S. cities. Corporate security forces gain greater autonomy of action as state forces prove ineffectual.

Spanish becomes an official language in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

Food and electricity prices increase further by 50% again, gasoline prices by 100%.

2038 The first U.S. elections are held since martial law was declared in Aug., 2033. The U.S. civilian government undergoes "reorganization". State governments demand autonomy almost to the point of balkanization as federal power wanes. Street violence, rampant poverty and extreme income stratification characterize the post-Collapse society. The country will teeter at the edge of anarchy for the next ten years.

Limb regeneration experiments proved successful. Some years and this process will be routine way to grow back lost body parts.

Quantum computers are widely available.

2039

Corporations eradicate mob rule in Night City.

Braindance developed at UC Santa Cruz.

New generation nuclear power plants start to work all around the world. The end of the Energy Crisis of the developed countries. Price of electricity reduces onto its quarter and its half of the level it was in 2010. End of the recession of the developed countries. The poor countries are less affected however they can export more products to the US and EU. The Greens protest against the nuclear power plants worldwide.

2040 The second Central American Conflict ends. Thousands of disillusioned and hardwired veterans come home to a country racked by violence and economic upheaval.

Corporate consolidation of power continues. Network 54 now controls 62% of all media broadcasting in U.S. 

2042

The CIA and NSA are purged after being linked to a series of independent and qustionable activities, including the 2nd CAW. Both organizations are gutted. The military then helps re-establish some semblance of federal control in the United States. The State of Emergency continues.

A new plague kills more than 17,700 in Chicago. The city is quarantined and blockaded for a year.

Rockerboy Johnny Silverhand's concert in Night City, NorCal, kills 18, wounds 51 in an assault on the Arasaka Complex. Old Arasaka Complex is gutted.

Programmer Alt Cunningham's mind is transferred into the Net by her own creation, the Soulkiller Program.

Technology is made continually more accessible to the public. Cybernetics and direct neural machine interfacing become common fashion and style elements of American culture. Many people voluntarily have portions of their bodies replaced with cybernetic equivalents and enhancements. Net traffic continues to grow as direct neural processors and cybermodems become more common.

The ratio of non-Hispanic whites falls to 50% in the USA. Even less between children.

2043 The Netwatch cyberspace police organization established by joint U.S./EU treaty to monitor "criminal" activity in the Net. First Net patrols are sent out to watch for "cyberspace crime".

First true artificial intelligence developed at Microtech's Sunnyvale, NorCal, facility.

2044

The Ihara-Grubb transformation algorithms redesign the Net into a virtual reality matrix.

The "Metal Wars" begin in Night City as gangs battle for turf. Other cities also face hordes of well armed, cyber-enhanced thugs establishing urban territories. Local attempts at control vary in effectiveness. Cybersoldiers are hired by corporations and others to bolster their use of force as a standard tool of business.

The Cyberpunk Movement: Simultaneously, a counter-movement starts, made up of a coalition of ex-cybersoldiers, Net operators, media performers, and nomads, all dedicated to fighting the growing corporate control of money, material and, most importantly, information. They call themselves Cyberpunks.

The AV-4 Aerodyne Assault Vehicle is developed to deal with riots in U.S. urban zones.

Cyberware gets into fashion in the EU.

2045 The presence of hundreds of out-of-work cyber-soldiers leads to the rise of international cyber-mercenaries. Lithuania hires cyber-mercs to repel invasions by Russian soldiers who don't wear no military uniforms.

The first basic nanotech cyberware is marketed commercially.

2046 The Third Corporate War is fought entirely in the Net, as rival Corps attack each other's Datafortresses. Hundreds of bystanders are killed by collateral damage.
2047 The U.S. economy gradually stabilizes with strategically placed (and minimal) federal intervention.

The Cyberpunk movement is in full swing, but corporate power continues to grow. Anarchistic and paranoid by nature, the Cyberpunks are too disorganized to keep the multinationals from acting with total authority across the face of the world. State governments try to exert more local control over corporate activities, but with little success. Many are bought out. Most of the public is apathetic or, due to corp propaganda, view the Cyberpunks as dangerous criminals.

First self-aware human clone is created, but dies after a few weeks.

2048 Brushfire Wars erupt in Eastern Europe.

President Blair begins to flex federal power again, starting with a committee to monitor corporate activity. Blair falls ill and dies later this year and VP Elizabeth Kress is sworn in. She continues to pursue Blair's policies.

2049 Cyberpunk Johnny Silverhand is almost killed in a Biotechnica assassination. Seven months later, he comes out of hiding and releases Clone Wars.

President Kress consolidates a faction in the Senate to provide a permanent watch committee limiting corporate powers and investigating abuses.

A big tsunami washes away some little island nations on the Pacific Ocean.

Genetic engineered "designer babies" are available.

2050

Rache Bartmoss, Cyberpunk netrunner, is killed, but soon afterwards his posthumous memoirs, Rache Bartmoss' Guide to the Net, are released. They reveal his state of semi-suspended animation.

Pro-Corporate Republican Gerald Hastings elected to the presidency after a massive, corporate-backed media campaign against incumbent Kress. The Pro-Corporate movement gains momentum. The Senate corporate watch committee is disbanded.

The ratio of Muslims reaches 15-30% in Western European countries especially in French, Belgian, German, Dutch and Austrian cities. Migrants from Africa and elsewhere are turned back and often shot.

Summer heat waves are common in the US and EU. American Southwest to Texas and Oklahoma is semi-desert.

Fukushima nuclear disaster cleanup will end within 10 years.
